John Schulte, CPA says he has always been interested in numbers but taking a couple of Accounting classes in high school and college sparked his interest in pursuing a career in the field.
“In college, my first Accounting class was challenging, but I did well,” said Schulte. “It was then that I really started to realize it was a field in which I could have a fulfilling career.”
Schulte serves as a Manager in Bland’s Government Consulting department, a position he began in 2017. In this role, he runs the contract with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for our Managed Care Organizations’ cost report examinations and manages various other audits as well. In 2009, Schulte joined Bland & Associates as a Senior Accountant and was promoted to Supervisor in 2015.
He says the key to his success lies in open communication with the team and clients, as well as his ability to meet the client’s expectations and deadlines. He also sees the merit in always working to improve on the skills required to exceed client expectations.
“My ultimate goals are to teach and train my staff to be better auditors, and always exceed our clients’ expectations,” he said.
Born and raised in Fort Dodge, Iowa, Schulte earned a BSBA in Accounting from Creighton University. He is also a Certified Public Accountant and has completed specific training regarding Medicare regulation, auditing, and compliance monitoring services.

Growing up in Mapleton, Iowa, Heidi McMahon, CPA was inspired when she visited an accountant with her dad.
“When I was in the fourth grade I went with my Dad to get their taxes prepared,” she said. “I thought it was cool that the lady preparing the documents could use the 10-key so quickly.”
Thinking that all CPAs drive nice cars sealed the deal.
“When I was young all the CPAs that I knew drove nice cars. I wanted a nice car to drive,” she said.
McMahon joined Bland & Associates in 2015 and has been named a Manager in the firm’s Government Consulting department. She specializes in the inspection of financial instruments to ensure that the documentation meets or exceeds the client’s requirements. Moving forward, she says her goals are to continue to streamline processes to best meet client needs and, as always, to provide exceptional service.
Heidi earned an Associate Degree in Arts and Sciences from Western Iowa Tech Community College in 1996. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Health and Human Performance in 1997 and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 2000, both from Iowa State University.

Growing up in South Sioux City, Nebraska, Jordan Peterson says he has enjoyed working with numbers since he was young because the answers were always the same.
Jordan joined Bland & Associates in 2013 and was recently promoted to Manager in the Government Consulting department. His role includes supervising large teams performing various types of compliance audits. Jordan oversees these compliance audits, develops compliance monitoring processes and procedures, contributes innovative solutions to Bland’s clients, and coordinates the communication processes between Bland, government agencies, and teaming partners.
He currently serves as a Bland Cares Board Member and earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting and Finance from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2012.

Growing up in Arlington, Nebraska, Rebecca Goodwin says she felt drawn to the accounting field when taking a course in high school, but for her it is much more than “crunching numbers”.
“Beyond the numbers, I enjoy being able to find innovative solutions or improvements to projects,” she said. “I pride myself on providing a product or service that goes above what is expected.”
Goodwin joined Bland & Associates in 2011. She was recently named a manager in the Government Consulting department where she is responsible for Healthcare Compliance and Attestation, and Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CJR) monitoring.
In 2013, Goodwin earned a degree in business administration with a concentration in accounting and business management from Midland University. She is an active member of the Accounting & Financial Women’s Alliance (AFWA) – Omaha Chapter and serves as the director of communications.

Mary Sassen joined Bland & Associates in 2018, serving as a manager in the Government Consulting department, and leading audits involving the Comprehensive Primary Care Plus model (CPC+). In this role, she oversees the audit team, designs protocols, and works to identify vulnerabilities to design risk mitigation strategies.
She is an experienced health care professional with a strong background in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Innovations (CMMI) Advanced Alternative Payment Model electronic clinical quality measures (eCQM) auditing. Sassen has extensive experience leading projects, developing policies and procedures, mentoring, and training team members and managing quality assurance processes.
Prior to joining Bland, she developed and managed utilization and case management programs for commercial insurance lines. Her clinical nursing experience is in critical care.
Sassen is a Registered Nurse and graduate of Nebraska Methodist Nursing School’s diploma program, a Certified Medical Case Manager and Health Insurance Associate. She has over 1,000 hours of nursing continuing education and has completed college course work toward her bachelor’s degree in nursing and secondary English education.

Growing up in rural Northeast Nebraska, Adam Steffen was sure he would be a mechanic like his dad. Taking a high school accounting class changed his mind. He says, “it just clicked.”
In 2017, Adam joined Bland & Associates as a contractor, and in 2019, he joined the family officially as a Healthcare Consulting Manager and Senior Team Lead in the Government Consulting department. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing the quality portion of the CPC+ Audits. He is also responsible for developing data analytics and healthcare consulting opportunities.
Much of Adam’s time is spent working on Medicare contracts, ensuring compliance with the requirements of several pilot programs. He also helps identify accounts to be audited by designing data analytics proposals supported by aggregated data and comparative analysis. This capability is applicable well beyond Medicare pilot programs and has been used for analysis on non-profits, school districts, manufacturers, distributors, and construction companies.
Prior to joining Bland & Associates, Adam spent 13 years working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska, including 8 years conducting audits of Medicare Cost Reports filed by Nebraska hospitals and 5 years running the Nebraska Comprehensive Health Insurance Pool. He also worked at Arbor Health Plan for 5 years where he was responsible for all aspects of the provider network.
Adam earned a Bachelors Degree in Accounting from Buena Vista University in 1999 and earned his MBA degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 2006.

Growing up in Columbia, Missouri, Megan Geissinger says her childhood dream was to be a professional ballet dancer, but she ultimately chose a career in human resources to help people succeed.
“I love to support employees so they can be more effective in their positions, hopefully leading to a stronger culture, thus building a successful organization,” she said.
She joined Bland & Associates in 2019 as a Manager in the Human Resources department, with a goal to support their mission of “creating a fulfilling and dynamic workplace culture”.
“I truly consider the employees of Bland my ‘customers’” so I fully intend to support, challenge, and embrace those relationships,” Megan continued.
In 2003, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Management from Truman State University. She moved to Omaha following graduation and earned an M.B.A. with concentrations in Finance and Human Resources from Bellevue University in 2007.

Spencer Pruss, CPA, CFE, PMP says he dropped his high school accounting class because the teacher did not allow the students to play calculator games. Despite his early hesitation, Pruss ended up majoring in accounting in college because it is “in his blood.” His father and sister are in the profession as well.
Pruss currently serves as a manager in the Bland & Associates Government Consulting department, a position he began in 2020. In this role, he serves as a project manager for the Comprehensive End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Care (CEC) Model. The CEC Model is designed to identify, test, and evaluate new ways to improve care for Medicare beneficiaries with ESRD. He also serves as a manager for Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug (MAPD) audits.
Pruss first joined Bland in 2012 as a business analyst intern, a position he held until he graduated college in 2015. Following graduation, Pruss joined the firm full time as a consultant and worked his way up to senior team lead in 2018. Prior to joining Bland, Pruss served as a customer service representative for the Bank of the West.
Born and raised in Omaha, Pruss earned a BSBA in business administration with a concentration in accounting and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 2015. Pruss is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Fraud Examiner, and a certified Project Management Professional. He is a member of the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), and the Project Management Institute (PMI). In his free time, Pruss volunteers with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and also serves as a Teammates program mentor.
