Jason Tonjes, CPA, CFE, Managing Shareholder, has spent his entire career devoted to the success of Bland & Associates, P.C.  He joined the Bland family right out of college in an entry level position in 1996.  Just ten years later he bought the firm, with the goal of achieving the company’s long-standing mission of providing outstanding client service as well as fulfilling careers for firm personnel.

To ensure superior client service and success, Tonjes says he simply leads by example.

“I treat every client situation like their business is my business – it’s important to listen to the client, be accessible, and provide timely, accurate advice,” he said.  “This is the mentality of all members of our Bland family; it is the most basic thing that unites us.”

“Our ability to truly partner with our clients to achieve their goals is what sets Bland & Associates apart from other, more traditional CPA firms,” Tonjes continued.

In addition to overseeing the day-to-day functions of Bland & Associates, Tonjes also oversees the Government Consulting Department, working directly with various government agencies as part of their oversight responsibilities.

Growing up on a farm near Pender, Nebraska, Jason Tonjes developed a strong work ethic at an early age – an asset that continues to be a benefit to his staff and his clients. He attended Midland University in Fremont, Nebraska, where he earned a B.S. in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting, as well as a B.S. in Economics. He holds CPA certifications in Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Colorado, South Dakota, Maryland, Minnesota, and Michigan.  He is also a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE).

In 2006, Tonjes made the Midland’s Business Journal’s “40 Under 40” list, an honor for leaders under 40 based on their contributions to their business and community. He was also named Outstanding Young Alumni of Midland University in 2008.

You could say Jeremy Vokt, CPA, is passionate about Accounting.  He says he’s always loved, not liked, LOVED numbers and knew he wanted to be a CPA since high school.

“As a kid, I would add up everything,” said Jeremy.  “I would add the nutrition facts on the cereal box like other kids searched for the prize or completed the puzzles.”

Born and raised across the river in Council Bluffs, he joined Bland & Associates in 2006 and serves as the head of the Audit & Assurance Department.

Vokt is a Bland Shareholder but, more than anything else, he says his most important job is providing clients with outstanding service, professional advice, and unparalleled financial direction.

“It’s important that my clients see me as a partner who looks out for the best interests of their companies and not just a typical bean counter,” he said.

“Our clients expect me to translate their financial information into useful knowledge they can use to make sound business decisions,” he continued.  “So, I take pride in being able to explain a company’s financial situation in plain English.”
Following his high school Business teacher’s advice, Vokt attended the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) because of its renowned, AACSB accredited Business and Accounting program*.  In 1998, he earned his B.S. in Accounting.  He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and he is also Accredited in Business Valuations (ABV), AICPA.   Prior to joining Bland & Associates he served as a manager at Lutz & Company, P.C.

Troy McKinney, CPA

Troy McKinney, CPA, rejoined Bland & Associates in 2006, and chairs the tax department.  In this role he offers premium advisory services for businesses and high net worth families.

McKinney started his career at Bland in 1998. He left the firm in 2000 to pursue an interest as a controller in a few private businesses, including MECA and Tighton Tools & Fasteners, before returning to Bland & Associates in 2006. He became a shareholder in 2008.  He has previously served as a controller for two local companies in the private sector which provides special insight into company operations and finances. This allows him to provide operational analysis to owners managing cash flow, preparing businesses to sell and considering merger or acquisition opportunities.

With a mother as an accountant, McKinney said the line of work was an easy choice for him. Originally from Newton, Iowa, he graduated from the University of Northern Iowa’s AACSB Accredited Business and Accounting program* with a B.S. in Accounting in 1998.  He became a licensed CPA in 1999 and completed the AICPA tax levels program in 2005. In 2009, McKinney graduated from the BKR Leadership Institute program, a two-year program designated for CPA shareholders.  In 2016, he completed the Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy (CAP) designation.   He previously held Series 7, 66 and Life and Health insurance licenses, however, he allowed these to lapse to focus on providing tax services.  McKinney is currently pursuing a master of science in financial services degree with the American College of Financial Services.

McKinney stated the secret to his success is living by one of Bland’s core values, striving to be better today than yesterday.

“There is so much that goes in to making an accounting firm successful, from handling client relationships, meeting your staff expectations, as well as dealing with the federal and state regulatory oversight agencies,” he stated.

“I always give my best effort to make sure our clients and personnel know they are with the best company and will always be taken care of to the best of our abilities,” McKinney continued.

Bland Shareholder Justin Frauendorfer, CPA, CFE, says his love for accounting did not happen naturally. “In college, my buddies didn’t think I could pass an entry level Accounting class,” he said. “That was enough motivation for me to become a CPA.”

“Thankfully, I discovered it to be interesting,” he continued.

It has been clear to me from an early age, that I need to be challenged each day. Without a challenge or goal, I find myself lacking significant motivation.

Frauendorfer joined Bland & Associates right after earning his BA in Accounting from Doane University in 2005. He was named a Shareholder in 2016.

He is a valuable member of the firm, focusing on directing the audit and attest services, as well as handling any forensic engagements. He primarily works with not-for-profit organizations, closely-held businesses, and governmental entities; however, he considers not-for-profits his niche area and spends available time providing trainings and technical accounting updates to these organizations.
